Google has released the guidelines for developers to update their app to support the display notch.
No cutouts on the right and left long edge of the device.

Google has published the guidelines for the developers to update their apps to support the display notch; as the lauch of Android P is very close. Google named display notch as ‘Cutouts’ and provide details what can developer expect from the device manufacturers with display cutouts. With the launch of iPhone X, the trend of display notch set in smartphone market.

Google providing the developers ‘taking the advantage of the cutouts’ and testing their apps with disply notch or cutouts. On other side, Google confirms that device manufacturers will also follow specific rules for efficient app compatibility across all smartphones with cutouts. Google only let the manufacturers to design only two cutouts per screen, and display notches are only designed at the top and bottom of the smartphone; no notches are allowed at the edges of the smartphone. This is the exact principles to follow by all manufacturers by Google.

Android P hosts official platform support for cutouts, with the APIs user use to display your contents inside or outside the cutouts.
First, devices must ensure that their cutouts do not negatively affect apps. There are two key requirements:
1. In portrait orientation, with no special flags set, the status bar must extend to at least the height of the cutout.
2. In fullscreen or landscape orientation, the entire cutout area must be letterboxed.
Second, devices may only have up to one cutout on each short edge of the device. This means that:
1. You won't see multiple cutouts on a single edge, or more than two cutouts on a device.
2. You won't see a cutout on the left or right long edge of the device.
Within these constraints, devices can place cutouts wherever they want.

Now, developers can make apps that work across the devices with one or two display cutouts with 18:9 and larger aspect ratio. Android P carries the platform that support APIs that can be used to show contents inside or outside the cutouts.
